Hockey season heading down the home stretch
The St. Joseph and Trumbull High boy’s ice hockey teams played to a 1-1 tie at the Rinks at Shelton as the season began to wind down for the FCIAC combines. Brady Jensen gave coach Greg Maxey’s Trumbull team a 1-0 lead at 8:37 of the first period. Matt Mocker had the assist.
Nick DiSabella scored for St. Joseph at 11:46 of the period. Adam Usinger and Andrew Van Etten had the assists. The Cadets had 45 shots to 23 for the Eagles. St. Joseph goalie Ryan Wilson made 22 saves. Will Guttman stopped 44 shots for the Eagles.
Trumbull knocked off Norwalk-McMahon 5-0 before losing to Darien 8-1.
The Eagles are 8-8-1. They played Fairfield Warde-Ludlowe on Feb. 24. Their regular season concludes with a game versus Staples-Weston-Shelton tonight (Feb. 25) at 6 p.m. at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
For coach J.R. Bria’s Cadets, they defeated Westhill-Stamford 2-1 on Usinger’s goal at the 5:05 mark of overtime. DiSabella had the assist. Usinger scored earlier to tie the game. DiSabella and Will Gilbert had the assists. Ryan Wilson had 25 saves to get the win in goal.
St. Joseph is coming off a tough couple of losses going into the final week of the regular season. The Cadets are 8-9-1 going into its game with Norwalk-McMahon. They finish the season with a date with Notre Dame of Fairfield at the Milford Ice Pavilion tonight (Feb. 25) at 8 p.m.
St. Joseph lost 2-1 to New Canaan at the Darien Ice Rink on Feb. 22.
After a scoreless first period, the Rams, now 9-10-0, took the lead on Gunnar Granito’s goal at 7:10 with Harry Gelnaw getting the assist. St. Joseph’s Evan Bocchino, from Kevin Faustich, tied the game with 3:26 remaining.
New Canaan’s George McMahon tallied the game-winner 14 seconds after the next faceoff.
Brooks Gammill and James Franzis had assists.
New Canaan outshot St. Joseph, 37-19. Peter Windas had 18 stops for NC; Wilson made 35 saves.
It was Staples-Weston-Shelton that edged out St. Joseph, 6-4, on Feb. 20. The Cadets took a 3-1 lead after one period. SWS tallied four straight goals over the next two frames before the Cadets got on the board midway through the final frame. St. Joseph’s Will Foldesi had three goals and Kyle Parchinski one. Gilbert, DiSabella (two), Usinger and Van Etten had assists.
SWS (15-7-0) had goals from Jimmy Beirne, Evan Mancini, Rob Whemhoff, Ryan Johnson and R.J. Gupta (two).
