A pair of Fairfield Warde goals off corner kicks, only 1:12 apart in the early-mid stages of the second half, propelled the Mustangs past Trumbull High in the FCIAC girls soccer tournament quarterfinals on Friday afternoon.

Warde’s Janette Debek and Kaitlyn Walsh scored on goals that were virtual mirror images of one another — the first coming off an Avery Oracheff corner kick from the left side and the second off an Amanda Motkin corner from the right side.

The goals came with 24:54 and 23:42 remaining, stunning an upset-minded Trumbull squad that had generated several first-half opportunities and a came so close to breaking the ice less than two minutes into the second half.

No. 3 Warde had beaten the sixth-seeded Eagles 1-0 during the regular campaign.

Trumbull’s early second-half chance came when Daniella Milovanov blocked a Warde clearing attempt near midfield, and passed to Meghan Ahearn, who used her speed to get by a defender into the right corner.

She cut back in along the goal line and centered the ball. Skyler Jorge was there, but her one-time shot attempt rolled just wide of the far side post.

Avery Rice made five first-half saves, and Maryna Barone stopped two shots in the second half.
