The Trumbull High girls cross country team competed along with 4,000-plus runners at the Wickham Invitational at Wickham Park in Manchester this past weekend.

The Invitational is one of the most prestigious and largest XC Invitationals, attracting high schools and middle school teams from all over New England.

Fifteen races were held throughout the day, featuring a middle school course, HS freshman runs, JV races, seeded and unseeded Varsity runs and a champion varsity race. HS, JV and varsity teams ran a  challenging 5K course, which included a steep hill known as the Green Monster.

THS girls had many strong performances.

The varsity girls ran the championship race, with Kate Romanchick earning a fifth-place finish in a personal best time of 19:31 for the course.

Margaret LoSchiavo came in second for Trumbull and 35th overall in 21:34.

Other top finishers included Sophia Hopwood (45th, 21:38), Molly Malloy (60th, 22:57) and Jill Ryan (23:36).

The top two JV times were posted by Lianne Iassogna (45th, 24:43) and Caitlin Walsh (49th, 24:57). The JV team finished ninth out of 25 teams.

The freshman shined with Alessandra Zaffina taking fifth in a time of 18:17.

Megan Becker was good for ninth in 18:23.

Other top freshman included Juliana Zaccagnino (20:56) and Meghan Empire (21:05).

Trumbull freshman placed third out of 13 teams.
