Girls cross country: Trumbull competes at Ocean State

The Trumbull High girls cross country team competed at the Ocean State Invitational at Goddard Park in Warwick (R.I.).

The Eagles placed 25th out of 64 schools from five states.

The varsity team ran a strong race with more depth than in past seasons. The top five varsity girls completed the challenging 5K averaging under 7-minute miles.

Senior Kate Romanchick led the way with an 11th place finish in a time of 19;39.

Sophomore Margaret LoSchiavo took second for the team and was 35th overall in 20:49.

Senior Molly Malloy was 56th overall with a time of 21:15.

Sophia Hopwood was 65th in 21:16.

The team also fared well in the freshman competition with two varsity team members placing in the top 20.

Freshman Alessandra Zaffina had an outstanding run, taking third overall in a time of 16:23.24.

Megan Becker finished 18th with a time of 17:21.

In regular season action, Trumbull (6-3) competed on Tuesday at Waveny Park in New Canaan against top competitors from Ridgefield, Danbury, New Canaan and Trinity Catholic.

The 4K race started with a tight group of girls in the lead pack and the top runners held the pack for the first 1.5 miles.

Trumbull's Kate Romanchick stayed on the heels of Ridgefield's Ava Kelly and Danbury's Lauren Moure, before breaking away with 800 meters to go to take the win with a time of 15:33. Kelly took second in 15:40.18 and Moure was third in 15:40.82.

Trumbull's top 6 included Margaret LoSchiavo 13th overall 16:42.74, Molly Malloy 14th 16:49 Sophia Hopwood 17th 16:57, Alessandra Zaffina 17:00.7 and Megan Becker 17:18.
