Girls basketball: Trumbull falls to South Windsor

The Trumbull High girls basketball team saw its season come to a close with a 36-29 loss to host South Windsor in the second round of the Class LL state tournament on Thursday.

Coach Steve Tobitsch’s ninth-seeded Eagles finished with a 19-5 record. South Windsor, the eight seed, improved to 19-3.

It has advanced to consecutive state finals, losing to Lauralton Hall in 2014 and Wilton High in 2015.

The Eagles took an 8-5 lead after one period and were in front 15-14 at the half.

South Windsor took a 24-21 advantage into the final quarter.

This was the final game for Trumbull’s seniors Alyssa Breunig, Nina Vetter and Emma Maguire.

Tucci scored 12 points and Vetter nine. Breunig had five points and Taylor Brown three.

Molly Murphy led South Windsor with 18 points and Alex Golsin had 11.

“Our girls played with incredible heart and desire,” Tobitsch said. “I feel really bad for them. This team has given everything to be the best they can be and I just wish as their coach we could of advanced and kept on playing.

"I am going to miss this group of girls. It was a special year and one that I will certainly look back on and remember all the successes the girls had.”

Trumbull advanced to the FCIAC semifinals and the Eagles were ranked in the Top 10 poll during the season.

Tucci was first-team All-FCIAC, Breunig second team, Brown third team and Victoria Ray and Vetter earned honorable mention honors.
