Girls basketball: Trumbull defeats St. Joseph in lidlifter
The Trumbull High girls basketball team pinned a 42-23 defeat on St. Joseph High on Saturday night in the first game of the Officials Vs. Cancer doubleheader at Alumni Hall in Fairfield.
Coach Steve Tobitsch's Eagles, who improved to 7-1, used a stifling defensive effort to limit the Cadets to 12 points in the first half and just 11 more in the second. St. Joseph fell to 4-3 overall.
Eight players cracked the scoring column for Trumbull High, led by Alyssa Breunig's 10 points. Nina Vetter chipped in with nine points and Claudia Tucci added eight.
The Eagles never trailed again after Julie Keckler knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:31 left in the first quarter to give Trumbull a 5-3 edge.
Jackie Josefick had six points to pace St. Joseph, which failed to score double digits in any quarter. The Cadets did not notch their first two-point basket until 3:26 mark of the second quarter, when Megan Robertson came up with a steal and layup.
That trimmed St. Joseph's deficit to 20-10, but Emma Maguire's lay-in helped Trumbull regain a 24-12 halftime edge. From there, the Eagles maintained a double-digit margin for the rest of the game.
After Trumbull pushed its advantage to 37-18 after three periods on Aisling Maguire's 3-pointer, neither team scored until there was 3:46 left in the game. Armed with a large lead, the Eagles coasted to their sixth consecutive victory following a 48-34 loss to unbeaten New Fairfield back in December.
