St. Joseph opened its season with a 53-35 loss to Pomperaug-Southbury in the first round of the Sandy Hook Tip Off Tournament in Newtown on Monday night.

Coach Chris Lindwall’s Cadets went in front 14-10 after one period, before the Panthers took a 23-20 lead into the half. It was 36-28 after three quarters.

St. Joseph’s Emma Elrod scored 12 points. Dennaye Hinds had 10 rebounds and three blocks. Maddie Johnson had six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Leading Pomperaug were Maggie Lee (25 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals) and Jada Stietzel (8 rebounds, 3 blocks).
