The St. Joseph High girls basketball team lost 41-34 to Pomperaug High from Southbury in the SWC/FCIAC Challenge held at Newtown High on Tuesday. St. Joseph will play host Newtown High at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Cadets took a 30-28 lead into the final period before the Panthers, who went 12-for-22 from the foul line, rallied to win.

St. Joseph, which didn’t take a free throw, canned four 3-pointers to one for Pomperaug.

Jackie Jozefick knocked down a trio of treys and finished with 17 points for St. Joseph. Shannon Healey (one 3-pointer) finished with seven points and Shannon Grabowski four.

Laura Rubenstein scored 10 points to lead the Panthers in the season opener for both teams.

Jozefick had 14 rebounds, blocked seven shots and had five steals. Healey had seven rebounds.
