Football: Trumbull's 1977 team New England’s best
Trumbull High’s 1977 football team earned the program’s first state championship and those Eagles will be honored this Friday at Trumbull’s game with Norwalk High.
Coach Jerry McDougall’s squad won the Class LL and FCIAC title and finished the season with an 11-0 record.
They were voted not only Connecticut’s top team, but the best in New England and were ranked 22nd in the country. McDougall was named coach of the year.
Ten Eagles were voted first-team All-FCIAC — five on offense and five on defense — when only one team was selected.
Offensive standouts selected were Dave Bloshuk, Mark Sitar, Joe Markus, Joe Chadwick and Curtis Pistey.
Leading the defensive performers were Serge Mihaly, Ray Cagganello, John DeBlasio, Hank Hall and Tim Norris.
Markus at running back, Mihaly at defensive tackle and Sitar at center were first-team All-State.
Ray Cagganello (defensive end) was second-team All-State.
Markus went on to play at UConn, where he was a record setter and an All-Yankee Conference running back and kick returner.
Mihaly was an All-Ivy League player for Yale at defensive tackle.
Sitar was a four-year starter at Lehigh University, where he was an All-ECAC performer at center.
Joe Chadwick went on to play offensive tackle at Wesleyan University.
Chris Milhous was a defensive back at Cornell University.
Greg Meyers went on to play baseball at Cornell, where he was an All-Ivy pitcher.
