The Trumbull High field hockey team lost a 1-0 overtime decision to non-conference rival Newtown High on Monday.
Newtown prevailed by scoring with 3:43 remaining in the 10-minute, seven-on-seven overtime period, putting a damper on an otherwise memorable Senior Night for the Eagles.
“It was a really exciting game – they fought really hard and every girl on this team got in this game tonight. They all played so hard, and I’m so proud of all of them,” Trumbull coach Colleen Filush said.
Trumbull, coming off a 2-0 win over rival St Joseph on Thursday, will carry an 8-6-0-1 record heading into Wednesday’s regular season finale against Norwalk.
Newtown improved to 8-7
Alison Kelleher scored, assisted by Lauren Zimmerman after Megan Kelleher intercepted a clearing attempt and got the ball into the goal area.
Trumbull goaltender Maddie SanAngelo made six saves, two of which came in overtime.
Newtown cage-minder Nathalie Shaker had five stops.
The Eagles generated eight penalty corners to Newtown’s five.
Trumbull had four corners in each half, with all of its second-half corners coming in the final five minutes, three of which were in succession on the same sequence in the final frantic minute.
