Crusaders top Cadets in boys hoop

St. Joseph lost to Trinity Catholic from Stamford on Wednesday, as the visiting Crusaders qualified for the boys basketball state tournament with a 67-59 victory at the Vito Montelli Court.

Tyrell St. John poured in 33 points for Trinity Catholic, now 8-10.

St. Joseph (3-15) was led in scoring by Aaron Sells, who made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.

The Cadets took a 20-18 lead after one quarter before Trinity used a 19-11 edge in the second to take a 37-31 lead into the locker room.

St. Joseph made it a 52-49 game after three quarters.

St. Joseph’s Mike Sulik scored 14 points and Camren Menefee had 11 points and seven rebounds. Omar Telfer had seven assists and five steals.

Each team had 21 field goals, with St. Joseph making 10 three-pointers to Trinity’s three.

The Crusaders were 22-for-35 from the foul line. St. Joseph 7-for-13.
