The St. Joseph High boys cross country team defeated Westhill of Stamford, 20-41, Tuesday afternoon at St. Joseph.

Senior James Mas placed second overall in 16 minutes, 10 seconds and senior Nick Zannis placed fifth overall in 17:35.  Senior Nick Maltese placed 27th in 20:49 in his final home meet of his career.

"We are at the midpoint of our season, so the goal continues to be on closing the gaps between our finishers," said St. Joseph coach David Scrivines. "We have three one-minute gaps between our first and seventh finishers so we are trying to reduce those gaps."

Sophomore Ryan Haack placed 12th in 19:12, while sophomore Brian Dineen placed 20th in 20:10, junior Will Whitlock placed 21st in 20:17 and junior Jack Moulder placed 22nd in 20:21.

Meanwhile, freshman Michael Zannis placed 24th in20:36, while sophomore Michael Pleszko placed 32nd in 21:53 and junior Nick Russo placed 33rd in 21:57.

Freshman Sean Yankocy and Dante Criscio placed 34th and 36th in 22:04 and 22:22, respectively, while juniors John Wypchoski and Stephen Garber placed 39th and 40th in 23:29 and 23:44, respectively.

Freshman Ben Kallsen placed 41st in 24:32, while junior Joe Griffin placed 42nd in 25:06 and freshman Luke Healy placed 44th in 25:57.

St. Joseph (3-7) battles Staples-Westport, Norwalk and Stamford on Tuesday, Oct. 6, in Westport.
