St. Joseph High senior James Mas earned All-New England honors with a 24th place finish in Saturday's New England Cross Country championships at Thetford Academy in Thetford, Vermont.

Mas finished the challenging course in 16 minutes, 49 seconds, which was the seventh fastest time among Connecticut runners.

"This capped off an outstanding high school career for James," said St. Joseph coach David Scrivines. "This was the toughest course we've raced on this season and James really met the challenge today."

Similar to last week's Connecticut State Open, in which Mas was aiming for a top-25 finish, place was also the primary goal in the New England championships. The top 25 finishers earned All-New England honors.

Mas started out in 68th place at the one-mile mark before moving up to 50th at the one-and-a-half mile mark and 26th place with just 1,000 meters remaining in the race.

Mas is the first St. Joseph runner to earn All-New England honors. A total of 257 runners competed in the race.
