St. Joseph senior James Mas won the Class M state championship cross country race at Wickham Park in East Hartford on Oct. 31.

Mas finished the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 13 seconds to capture his second consecutive state title. He held off Northwestern's Peter Bakker by a solid nine seconds to capture the title.

"James ran a heck of a race," said St. Joseph coach David Scrivines. "He's been consistent all season and his preparation and confidence levels have been strong; I couldn't be happier for him."

Senior Nick Zannis placed 23rd overall in 17:45 to finish a strong high school career.

Sophomore Ryan Haack placed 72nd in 18:56 and junior Jack Moulder placed 90th in 19:31.

Sophomore Brian Dineen crossed the line in 19:36 (96th place) and junior Will Whitlock finished in 19:40 (98th place). Senior Nick Maltese placed 134th in 20:41.

"I was pleased with our team performance," said Scrivines, whose team placed 10th overall in the 29-team race. "We made some real significant improvements with our runners who competed in the state meet."

Mas will compete at the State Open today at Wickham Park at 2:45.
