Cadets claim Class M crown in extra innings

Nick Williams pitched nine innings of one-run baseball, and Matt Batten’s double drove home the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth, when coach Jim Chaves’ Cadets defeated Northwestern 2-1 in extra innings to win the Class M state championship in Middletown on Saturday.

For the 11th-seeded Cadets (20-6) it was their first state title since 1985.

Brett Olayos opened the winning frame with a one-out single. Matt Laveneziana came in the pinch run and scored on Batten’s two-bagger.

Williams put the last out in the book on a ground out to Mark Hirschbeck at second base to strand two runners in the home ninth.

Top-seeded Northwestern, which finished its season with a 23-2 record, scored in the bottom of the first inning.

Williams gave up only four more hits until the final frame.

St. Joseph tied the game in the second, when Mike Pulaski singled and later scored on Jake Amoroso’s fielder’s choice.
