The St. Joseph High boys cross country team started the season with a strong showing at the Wilton quad-meet on Sept. 10.  The Cadets defeated Fairfield Ludlowe, 26-29, while dropping to both Fairfield Warde (24-31) and Wilton (24-31).

Sophomore James Mas was the top Cadet finisher, placing second overall in 17:19.

Fellow sophomore Nick Zannis placed seventh in 18:38 and juniors Will Gallagher (13th, 19:24), Evan Aldo (17th, 19:39) and Kyle O’Brien (19th, 20:02) were amongst the top five Cadet placers.

“We had a solid group up front with our sophomores and juniors,” said St. Joseph coach David Scrivines.  “We will need to find a way to close the gap with our first five runners between now and the postseason.”

Seniors Jared Quigley (27th, 21:08), Aidan Quigley (30th, 21:22) and Joe Capio (36th, 21:51) were in the next wave of finishers for St. Joseph.

Junior Jack Guman placed 37th in 21:54, senior Jon Lemanski placed 38th in 21:56 and senior Chris Haack placed 44th in 22:12.

Additional finishers included: sophomore Nick Maltese (60th, 23:53), freshman Matt Conway (63rd, 24:01) and freshman Nick Russo (77th, 26:21).

In the Windham Invitational in Willimantic on Sept. 14, the Cadets placed fifth out of 21 teams in the Varsity-3 race.

Mas was once again the top Cadet finisher, as he placed fifth overall in 16:57.

Zannis placed 34th in 18:14, while Gallagher placed 35th in 18:16.

O’Brien (53rd, 18:47) and Aldo (55th, 18:52) both had strong races, while Jared Quigley placed 88th in 19:34 and Aidan Quigley placed 106th in 20:32.
