Cadet harriers defeat FCIAC foes
The St. Joseph boys cross country team opened its season by picking up two wins in its season-opener at Waveny Park in New Canaan on Sept. 9. The Cadets defeated Westhill of Stamford, 22-33, and Trinity Catholic from Stamford, 15-40.
Junior James Mas placed third overall in 16 minutes, 59 seconds, while fellow junior Nick Zannis placed sixth overall in 17:52.
The Cadets received strong performances from seniors Will Gallagher and Kyle O’Brien, who finished 13th (18:43) and 23rd (19:30), respectively, on the 5,000 meter course.
“The first meet helps up gauge where we are,” said St. Joseph coach David Scrivines. “Half of our team is comprised of freshman or first-year runners, so this race was good to give a lot of our runners some early race experience.”
Freshman Ryan Haack placed fifth for the Cadets (31st, 20:43) and senior Jack Guman placed sixth (34th, 21:11).
Meanwhile, fellow freshman Michael Pleszko (40th, 22:19) and Brian Dineen (43rd, 22:38) had strong races, while sophomores Dylan DeMoura (44th, 22:43) and Camren Menefee (49th, 23:45) cracked into the top 10 St. Joseph finishers.
Additional finishers for St. Joseph included: sophomore Nicholas Russo (51st, 24:15), junior Nick Maltese (52nd, 24:35) and freshmen Liam Callahan (53rd, 24:47), Daniel Marchetti (54th, 24:51), Mark Kendziorski (55th, 24:56), Kevin Frattaroli (58th, 28:37) and Anthony Crocco (59th, 34:32).
Overall meet winner New Canaan defeated St. Joseph, 20-39, while Ridgefield defeated St. Joseph, 24-35.
St. Joseph will travel to Windham High School on Saturday, Sept. 13, to participate in the Windham Invitational.
The Cadets return to FCIAC action on Tuesday with a meet at Fairfield Warde. The five-team meet includes Greenwich, Trumbull, Bridgeport Central and Warde.
