Boys soccer: Unbeaten Trumbull shocks Stamford

The Stamford High boys soccer team found out the hard way that Trumbull High considers itself a second-half team.

Trailing by two goals with under 11 minutes left in their regular-season finale on a wind-swept Monday afternoon, the Eagles erupted for three goals — two from Connor Jorge and another from Chris Lancia — to stun host Stamford, 3-2, on the Black Knights' Senior Day.

"We try to wear people down in the second half," Trumbull head coach Sebastian Gangemi said.

Both teams had already qualified for the FCIAC tournament, kicking off Thursday. Trumbull (12-0-3), which capped off an undefeated regular season, is seeded second has a home game. Stamford's seed and Trumbull's opponent will be determined following the conclusion of the regular-season contests tonight.

After a scoreless first half, the Black Knights (8-5-3) took the lead on Anthony Oliveros's goal. Oliveros lofted ball up and over Eagle keeper Jonathan Campbell from distance.

At 13:39, Uriy Yosypiv then doubled Stamford's lead with a header.

Lancia got Trumbull going with a stunning left-footed strike with 11 minutes left.

"He has like seven goals like that," Gangemi said of the highlight-reel goal.

Jorge roofed the equalizer in the 74th minute off a scramble out front, before winning it with 32 seconds left to play.

Jorge's initial shot was saved by Stamford keeper Alex Grabar, but Jorge headed the rebound home to power the Eagles to the win.
