Boys soccer: Trumbull Eagles shut down St. Joseph
Trumbull High defeated host St. Joseph, 6-0, in an FCIAC boys soccer match on Saturday.
Jason Weinstein had three goals for coach Sebastian Gangemi’s Eagles (7-3-0).
Coach Carlos Reinoso’s Cadets (0-9-1) fell behind 2-0 in the first 11 minutes, only to attack the third relentlessly in the final twenty minutes of the session.
Sawyer Meehan, Skylar Furlong, Josh Harper and Rob Razzaia put pressure on the Trumbull back line of Nicholaos Xenakis, John-Michael Recker, Joe Piccolo and keeper Andrew Menjivar, only to be turned back.
Weinstein scored off a header in the sixth minute and Tiago Frazao doubled the advantage five minutes later.
Anthony Barreira assisted on both tallies, finding space in the defensive third, to give Trumbull the 2-0 lead.
Trumbull came out strong from the center spot and throughout the second half
Howard Qian crossed the ball to Weinstein, who buried his point blank shot at 37:43.
Cadet keeper Mike Pleszko had no chance to make a save.
Four minutes later, Matheus Santiago made two fine moves to leave midfielders in his wake before burying his shot.
Connor Bluestein was the playmaker on the Eagles next two goals.
The senior found Weinstein open at the opposite post at 21:08 and then connected with Andrew Restrepo for a 5-0 lead at the 16:31 mark.
Menjivar secured the clean sheet with a brilliant left-handed stop on Rob Razzaia’s shot to end a Cadet flurry with six minutes remaining.
