The St. Joseph boys soccer team put together one last rush in the final 42 seconds only to have a long throw-in clang off the crossbar when New Canaan won a 3-2 decision on Senior Night at Dunning Stadium on Thursday.

Coach Carlos Reinoso Jr.’s Cadets fell behind 1-0 then took the lead when Robert Razzaia scored consecutive goals barely two minute apart, the second coming in the 25th minute.

New Canaan, which won its second straight contest, tied the game at the 4:35 mark of the half. Emilio De La Vega gave the Rams a 3-2 advantage when he deposited a rebound 16 minutes into the second half.

St. Joseph (3-9-1) will host Darien High on Friday at 4:15.

New Canaan took a 1-0 lead when Tim Norton buried a shot past Tyler Higgins five minutes into the contest. Razzaia leveled the score at 24:22 of the half after Christian Cinque stole a switch attempt and sent a through ball to the hard-charging senior.

Razzaia added another goal only just under two minutes later, when the forechecking Cinque knocked the ball away inside the box and Razzaia pounced before Ram keeper Jack Richardson could react.

Looking to equalize, Hans Toft-Nielsen took an over-the-top pass from Luke Crowley, and then slotted a pass to Norton but St. Joseph’s Jack Attanasio doubled back to clear the ball at the 9:05 mark of the half.

The Rams’ Matt Cosco drew a foul 10 yards outside the penalty area and ripped a shot past a one-man wall, off a diving Higgins’ hands, and inside the near post to tie the game at 2-all 4:35 until the break.

Richardson’s best save of the came with 18:25 remaining.

After Doyle Catlin cleared a free kick opportunity, the Cadets’ Ben Talbot recentered the ball to Attanasio. His header from 8-yard out was snatched by the Rams’ senior keeper.
