Boys hockey: Darien stuns St. Joseph in second period
The St. Joseph High boys ice hockey team got off to a fast start before Darien High put on an offensive clinic in the final two periods in posting a 5-3 victory at the Rinks at Shelton on Wednesday night.
Darien’s Jake Kirby scored two goals and added an assist in a span of 1:09 of the second stanza to take the score from 2-2 to 5-2 in the FCIAC contest.
The Blue Wave, now 8-1-0 on the season, outshot the 5-4-0 Cadets by a 50-19 margin, with David Voigt making 19 saves. The Cadets’ Ryan Wilson made 45 stops.
Adam Usinger gave St. Joseph the lead off assists from Nick DiSabella and Will Foldesi just 5:51 into the game.
Foldesi tallied off a Usinger assist at the eight-minute mark.
Tom Sulger halved the deficit with only 19 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Ben Brown had the assist.
The Wave’s Max DeBeradinis tied things at 4:26 before Kirby starting the run on goals for Darien at 13:37 of the second period.
Herbie Hazelton, Riley Mullin, Kirby, Scott Voigt and Ed Glassmeyer had assists.
DiSabella put the Cadets back on the board with 1:09 left in regulation. Andrew Van Etten and Connor Hurley had assists.
