Baseball: St. Joseph Cadets open season 3-0
Jack Mathews, Jim Evans (five RBIs), Aaron Kirby (four RBIs), Luke Kirby and Hadyn Gourley (two RBIs) hit home runs when coach Jim Chaves’ Cadets improved to 3-0 with a 25-2 victory over Bridgeport Central on Monday.
Jake DeLeo (three RBIs) had two doubles and Charlie Pagliarini and Evans had one each. Antonio Ferraro got the win.
Evans had three hits, including a home run, when the Cadets went on the road and defeated Sheehan High, 11-2, in Wallingford on Sunday.
Evans drove in three runs. DeLeo had a two-run double. Owen Horne singled in a run. Gourley doubled and Stephen Paolini had a triple. Al Paolozzi pitched into the fifth to earn the win. Trent Price relieved in the fifth and Connor Murphy in the seventh, as the Cadets allowed only two hits.
St. Joseph posted a 13-2 run-shortened five inning decision over host Hamden High on Thursday. The Cadets, leading 5-2 after three innings, batted around and scored six runs in the fifth. Pagliarini had a triple and a double and drove in six runs. Evans had three of St. Joseph’s 13 hits and had two RBIs. Horne and Luke Kirby had two hits each. Ben Talbot pitched the first four innings to get the win in the season opener for both teams. Gourley pitched the fifth to complete the four-hitter.
