Baseball: Post 141 tops Westport

Frank Puglia remained unbeaten and Matt Fasoli led a 12-hit attack for Trumbull when Post 141 defeated Westport, 9-2, in American Legion Zone 4 action on Tuesday.

Trumbull improved to 16-4. Westport dropped to 7-8.

Puglia, now 5-0, pitched into the seventh, scattering eight hits and striking out three.

Brian Hnatuk struck out two in a scoreless seventh.

Fasoli had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBI.

Justin Waldek, Kris DiCocco and Dino DiGirolamo each had two hits.

For Westport, Zach Azadian had three hits including a double. Mike Cusa had two hits.

Trumbull scored three runs in the top of the third inning to erase a 1-0 deficit.

Waldek drew a leadoff walk before Zach Sagar reached on fielder’s choice to third base. Waldek was safe at second as the throw was dropped.

Fasoli singled up the middle driving in Waldek, with Sagar going to third and Fasoli taking second on an errant relay throw.

One out later, DiCocco singled to right to score Sagar. DiGirolamo’s infield single plated Fasoli.

In the Trumbull fourth, Waldek singled and Fasoli brought him home with a double to take the score to 4-1.

DiCocco singled to start the fifth, before Daniel Mendez and Simon Whiteman each walked with two outs to load the bases.

Waldek singled to left to score DiCocco.

Westport made it 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth with Marco Latella hitting a single to score Cusa.

Puglia left the bases loaded with a flyball out.

In the Trumbull sixth, DiGirolamo and Mendez had RBIs around a sacrifice bunt by DiCocco and Chris O’Brien’s base hit.

Leading 7-2, Trumbull added a run in the seventh.

Whiteman led off with a double down third base line and Waldek followed with a walk.

Whiteman took third on a flyout to center and scored on a wild pitch.

Post 141 is scheduled to host Westport today and Thursday at Trumbull High with first pitch both days at 5:45.
