With a 3-0 record in pool play at the Firecracker Invitational Tournament at Dean College in Franklin (Mass.), manager Brett Conner’s Trumbull American Legion Post 141 won its division and earned the No. 3 for the quarterfinals. Post 141 with play today at 1 p.m. at Bryant University in Smithfield R.I. A win puts Trumbull into Sunday's semifinal. Cheshire Post 92 is the No. 1 seed. In Friday action, Matt Baccaro allowed only three hits, walked two, and struck out five in Trumbull’s 1-0 victory over Acushnet (Mass.). Post 265 looked to take the lead in the second when it put runners on second and third with no out. The right-handed Baccaro responded with three strikeouts. On his third punchout, however, the third strike went past catcher Zach Sagar, who made an underhand toss to Baccaro covering the plate for the third out. Post 141 took the lead in the top of the seventh. Sagar doubled to left-center field and was safe at third on Matt Fasoli’s bunt. Stanley Wolpiuk plated Sagar with a sacrifice fly. Acushnet had a two-out single in the home half of the seventh, but Luke Waldek at shortstop fielded a grounder and got the game-ending force out with a throw to Mark Hirschbeck covering second. Hirschbeck and Fasoli led Trumbull’s six-hit attack with two hits each.
