Trumbull coach Marce Petroccio will bring a fast and physical team with him for its season opener at Staples on Friday at 7.

“We have speed, the size is there, and we are physical,” Petroccio said. “I’m dying to see how our skills kids match up with their skill kids. They have some good ones. Their quarterback (Ryan Thompson) is excellent. He is tall, he can throw, he can run. He is an athlete.

“Nick Armentano and Miles Scarfo, from what I’m hearing, no one has stopped them yet in scrimmages,” he said of the Wreckers’ wide outs. “It is going to be a great challenge for our defense. They are going to spread it and wing it. They will run inside, but it is all to set up the RPO (run-pass option).”

Hunter Agoste will be Trumbull’s quarterback.

“First and foremost, what I love about Hunter is that he is a student of the game,” Petroccio said of the junior. “He knows where everyone from the line to receivers where they belong. Hunter has a great demeanor, nothing phases him.”

Nick Tuccinardi, “a great preseason” and Roland Johnson “showing flashes” will be running backs.

Petroccio said of his core receivers, Corbin Smith, Owen Solono (captain), Ben Carley and Justin Delaney: “Any one of those four can go the distance at any time.”

Jake Delfino (captain), Xavier Richardson, Kevin DeNicola, Cooper Dayton (captain) and Kevin DeNicola will look to win the line of scrimmage.

“They have worked hard in the weight room to be quicker, stronger, and physically explosive,” he said. “They are a together group that takes pride in what they do.”

Linebackers will key a deep defense.

Petroccio said: “It starts with Jake Peterson (captain) and Jordan Black at inside backer. Our outside backers are Matt Inzitari and Amr Othman. We have a great rotation up front. Xavier Richardson is a tackle. Delfino (tackle) has had a great preseason. The defensive ends are Dylan Moran and Cooper Dayton with Ben Carley.”

Corbin Smith and Jack Durland will play the corner. The safeties are Solono, Dan Kelly, Justin Delaney, Justin McKee and Warren Little.

Petroccio is returning to play Staples, a team he coached to three state titles in his 25 years.

“It’s exciting to get ready to play a football game and hit another football jersey than the one we’ve been hitting for over a year,” he said. “It will be blocking and tackling. It will be when you make a big play can you take advantage. And when they make a play, can you stop the bleeding. You can’t do anything about the prior play, but you can about the next play. We’ll come out and play our brand of football. One play can turn the tide. It will be fun.”
