Trumbull places three at State Open

Aethen Munden and Lukas Cylwik placed fifth and Corbin Milne took sixth for Trumbull at the State Open Wrestling Championship held at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Sunday.

Munden was seeded eight at 195 pounds after the sophomore placed second in Class LL. He pinned in his first bout then lost to No. 1 seed and second-place finisher Sam Young from Haddam-Killingworth. Munden posted pins of 1:34 and 45 seconds. Third-place finisher Brendan Gilchrist from Norwalk beat him in the consolation semifinals. Munden pinned Staples’ Jackson Oliver to finish fifth.

Cylwik was the No. 4 seed. Class LL champion at 220 pounds, he won his first two matches then lost 5-2 to No. 1 seed and eventual Open champion Thomas Lunt from Xavier. Munden then lost 2-1 to fourth-place finisher Jhonnyer Ramirez from Danbury before he defeated No. 10 seed Michael Remick from Maloney to take fifth.

Milne was seeded 24th at 182 pounds. A junior, Milne took sixth in Class LL and topped No. 9 seed Tommy Bean from Stafford 10-5 in his first bout. Eventual champion Connor Smith from Fairfield Prep knocked Milne into wrestle backs. He won three straight over higher seeds (11-8 and 4-3 decision and 4:20 fall) before losing a 6-4 decision to fifth-place finisher Ronan Moynihan from Xavier, In the match for fifth Milne lost to No. 2 seed Anthony Deicicchi.

No. 17 seed Andrew Grabinski went 4-2 at 138 pounds. No. 20 seed Hayden Provencal was 3-2 at 152 pounds. No. 15 seed Warren Little split his 160-pound matches. Grabinski’s losses came to champion Kai O’dell from Danbury and fourth-place finisher Jaeckez Mendez from East Hartford. Provencal won twice by fall. He lost 8-4 to No. 4 Caiden Talento from Platt and to No. 10 Michael Carpenter from Pomperaug. Little won 9-8 and 10-9 decisions. His losses came to No. 2 seed Nick Glynn from Haddam-Killingworth and Xavier’s Charles Weidman.
