Trumbull girls fourth at FCIAC cross country meet, Holden sets record

The Trumbull High girls’ cross country team finished fourth at the 2021 FCIAC Championship meet, held Wednesday at New Canaan’s Waveny Park.

The Eagles (134) finished behind champion Ridgefield (54), Greenwich (102) and New Canaan (103).

Senior captain Kali Holden finished third and her 14:44 time for the 4,000-meter race set a school record. She earned All-FCIAC honors for the fourth consecutive season.

Holden’s classmate and fellow captain Evelyn Marchand earned All-FCIAC honors after she finished 14th (15:33). It is the third consecutive year Marchand has earned all-league accolades.

Junior Abigail Poplawski was Trumbull’s third finisher, placing 34th (16:22).

Sophomores Leela Kocinsky (16:32), Bridget Walsh (16:35) and Isabel O’Brien (16:36) came in 41st, 42nd and 44th place, respectively. Junior Gabby Pavlov rounded out Trumbull’s varsity unit (57th, 17:19).

In the junior varsity race, junior Risa Hilinski was Trumbull’s top finisher in 19th place (18:18).

Christina Spataro led the Eagles with an eighth-place finish (10:40) for the 2,500-meter freshman race.

Trumbull’s next meet will be the Class LL championship meet at Wickham Park on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 1:30 p.m.

It will be the first state championship meet since 2019.
