It was the Eagles’ first invitational meet in nearly two years. Last fall, Trumbull could only participate in dual-meets before competing for a four-team FCIAC East Regional title.
Trumbull had runners in compete in the freshmen (1.5 miles), junior varsity (2.5 miles) and varsity (2.5 miles) races versus more than 20 schools from Connecticut and New York.
“We use the Wilton Invite to learn what we can about the teams we will see in the postseason,” Trumbull coach Jim McCaffrey said. “It is an early season opportunity to help us strategize. We also use this meet to help our inexperienced runners learn more about their abilities.”
The Trumbull freshmen contingent finished fourth in the large school division. Christina Spataro placed 18th overall out of 87 runners to lead the Eagles.
The Trumbull junior varsity team also finished fourth. Sophomore Maddie Moffat earned a medal with an 18th place finish.
The varsity team finished second to perennial Class LL power Glastonbury in the large school division. Trumbull placed ahead of FCIAC opponents Greenwich and Staples.
Senior captain Kali Holden led the way with a sixth-place overall finish (15:44) in the 115-runner field. Junior Abigail Poplawski was next in 14th place (16:29) and senior captain Evelyn Marchand was 20th (16:48).
Sophomore Leela Kocinsky finished 37th (17:18) and classmate Bridget Walsh was 41st (17:38).
Trumbull returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 21 when it hosts Greenwich and Norwalk in a tri-meet. It will be the Eagles’ final regular-season home meet. Following the meet, the team will host its annual Senior Night festivities.
