Trumbull girls cross country takes part in Camp Sloper Invitational

The Trumbull High girls’ cross country program participated in the Camp Sloper Invitational on Friday afternoon in Southington.

Trumbull had runners in compete in the freshmen (1.98 miles), junior varsity (2.48 miles) and varsity (3.1 miles) races.

The Trumbull freshmen contingent finished fourth. Christina Spataro placed seventh overall (14:52) out of 33 runners to lead the Eagles.

The Trumbull junior varsity finished second out of seven teams. The Eagles placed six runners among the top 12 finishers. Senior Abigail Clark finished fourth (20:21), while sophomore Maddie Moffat was fifth (20:28).

The varsity team, which is ranked seventh in the latest SoundRUNNER Connecticut High School Coaches Poll, concluded the day with a successful effort, finishing first in the eight-team field.

The Eagles placed six runners among the top 13 finishers.

Senior captain Kali Holden led the way with a third-place overall finish (21:12) in the 75-runner field. Senior captain Evelyn Marchand was next in sixth place (22:33) and junior Abigail Poplawski finished eighth (22:43).

Sophomore Leela Kocinsky finished 10th (23:22) and classmate Bridget Walsh was 12th (23:34). Junior Isabel O’Brien was 13th (23:44).

“Meets like this are confidence boosters for our younger runners,” Trumbull head coach Jim McCaffrey said. “At least half of the kids on our team have never participated in these types of invitational competitions. Success, like today, gives us confidence to keep working hard to achieve our goals.”

Trumbull returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to New Canaan’s Waveny Park to face the Rams, Danbury Ridgefield and FCIAC quad-meet.
