Trumbull girls cross country 5-1, Holden first in FCIAC quad meet

The Trumbull High girls’ cross country team went 2-1 in an FCIAC quad-meet against Greenwich, Norwalk and Bridgeport Central on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles (5-1) won 15-50 against Norwalk and Bridgeport Central, but fell to Greenwich on a 28-28 tie-breaker.

Trumbull senior captain Kali Holden won the 2.9-mile race in 18:20. It was Holden’s second victory of the season.

Junior Abigail Poplawski finished fourth (19:32).

Senior captain Evelyn Marchand was fifth (19:38).

Sophomore Leela Kocinsky placed seventh (19:54), while classmates Isabel O’Brien (20:32) and Bridget Walsh (20:47) were 10th and 11th, respectively.

The Eagles recorded the fifth fastest team time in history on their home course.

Head coach Jim McCaffrey was pleased with the Eagles’ effort.

“We are 5-1 and are gearing up for a busy week of training,” he said. “I believe in these young women and they believe in themselves. That is a recipe for success.”

Following the meet, seven seniors -- Holden, Marchand, Ellie Carraturo, Abigail Clark, Sydney Fox, Julietta Siciak and Anna Storino -- were recognized in a Senior Night ceremony.

The Eagles return to action on Friday afternoon when they participate in the Sloper Invitational in Southington.
