Trumbull, Norwalk tie in FCIAC field hockey

Trumbull and Norwalk played to a 2-2 tie in a FCIAC field hockey contest at Testa Field on Tuesday.

After a scoreless first half that saw limited offensive opportunities for both teams, sophomore Erin Foley gave Trumbull a 1-0 lead early in the third quarter off an assist from junior Maura Carbone.

Ten minutes later, junior Kayla Barbagallo made it 2-0 Trumbull off an assist from Foley. It was Barbagallo’s fourth goal of the season.

In the fourth quarter, Norwalk scored twice to force overtime.

Freshman Kaelyn Fogelson got Norwalk on the scoreboard after she stole a pass and converted a reverse sweep with 10:43 remaining. Five minutes later, Norwalk’s Gemma Ward converted on a penalty stroke to tie the score at two.

Trumbull had a penalty corner as regulation time expired, but Norwalk was able to clear the ball.

In overtime, neither team had many offensive chances until the Eagles forced a penalty corner as time expired.

Goalie Sophia Taiyanides made a save off the Eagles’ initial shot and the Bears’ defense cleared the ball out of the circle to end the game.

With the tie, the Eagles are now 4-2-2 on the season, 3-1-2 in FCIAC play. Norwalk is 2-4-1 (2-4-1 in the FCIAC).

For the game, Trumbull outshot Norwalk, 10-9, and held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Trumbull goalie Jenny Flynn finished the game with five saves. Taiyanides made seven saves for Norwalk.

Trumbull returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Greenwich at 5 p.m.
