St. Joseph opened its season with a 3-2 victory over Newtown High in Trumbull on Thursday.

Coach Jeff Babineau’s Cadets won game five, 15-11, after the Nighthawks forced the decisive set with a 26-24 game four win.

The teams traded set wins, with St. Joe’s taking game one (25-22) and three (25-18) and Newtown winning game two (25-22).

Highlighting the Cadets victory were Ava Tuccio (10 kills 2 blocks), Lily Mattison (10 kills 7 aces) and Kyla Debenedetto (31 assists 2 aces).

Leading Newtown were Natalie Horn (10 kills, 14 digs), Genevieve Murray (11 kills, 7 blocks) and Amanda Aivjo (10 kills).
