St. Joseph loses to Bassick in boys basketball

St. Joseph lost to Bassick 71-69 in the first round of the Notre Dame-West Haven Tournament basketball tournament.

The Cadets (0-1) will play Hamden today at 5:30. Bassick meets Notre Dame- at 7:30.

Will Sydnor led St. Joseph with 22 points. Johnny Niv made five 3-pointers and finished with 18 markers. Derek Long and Charley Hare each scored eight points.

Bassick’s Tyrese Hammond tallied 20 points. Joshua Santiago had 14, Eric Upchurch 11 and Damien Nin 10.

Bassick made 25 of 27 free throws as it improved to 3-0. St. Joseph was 10 for 20.

St. Joseph led 14-11 after one period. Bassick was in front 35-34 at the half and 54-52 going into the last quarter.
