The St. Joseph girls’ lacrosse team is accustomed to competing in the FCIAC.

“Some days good; some days bad,” St. Joseph coach Leeland Gray said. “We are a strong team. We’ve played some of the top teams in the state and we can’t hang with those teams yet. We are doing well with teams (ranked) 11 and up.”

St. Joseph is 6-5 on the season with losses to Darien. Ridgefield and Staples

“We have five freshman that made varsity team. It is pretty equal across the board,” Gray said of his Cadets, who went 10-6 and advanced to the state semifinals in 2021. “We lost our starting goalie and backer on defense. Everyone else came back.”

Izzy Casucci, Maddigan Leifer and Mia Geignetter captains.

“Izzy is going to Marquette. Mia is committed to Franklin & Marshall. Maddigan is playing at Hamilton College,” Gray said. “Izzy is center middie and leads the offense. Mia plays right wing and spearheads the defense. Maddigan is a top middie as well and plays both ways.

“We are grooming girls at backer. We have two players rotating in goal. It’s a process. It’s all about getting ready for June.”

Emily Robinson a junior and freshman Bridget Connolly will be in goal.

Bella Molnar and Teagen Cavaliere play low post.

“They are both juniors. This is their second year together,” Gray said. “On the left wing is sophomore Casey McGlothlin and Mia is on the right. Izzy takes most of the draws. We rotate in Casey Mayglothling, and on occasion freshman Camryn Tomey.”

Casucci and Leifer lead the attack. Mayglothling plays both ways. Autumn Murphy and Mallory Doyle are other attackers.

“We have a nice group with great chemistry,” Gray said. “In the next four weeks we want to tighten up the synergy on defense and clean up some things on offense. When we do that, we’ll be okay come states.”
