St. Joseph football defeats Staples

St. Joseph defeated Staples 35-14 in Westport. It was the 25th consecutive victory for coach Joe Della Vecchia’s Hogs, ranked second in the GameTimeCt Top 10 poll.

St. Joe’s, led by Riley Jordan who rushed for 100 yards, scored the first four touchdowns and led Staples 28-6 at halftime.

Jordan scored on a 35-yard run on the first drive. Logan Spoelstra tacked on the first of five conversion kicks. Quarterback Matt Morrissey found paydirt on a pair of 1-yard runs before Maxwell Warren connected with Anthony Greco on an 18-yard option pass for the 28-0 advantage.

Staples (1-1) got on the board in the second quarter with a six-yard pass to Nick Armentano from Ryan Thompson. The two linked up again for a 35-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Jordan scored from two yards out in the third quarter.

St. Joseph (2-0) will visit Windsor (2-0) Friday at 7 p.m.
