Sollenberger, Mercado lead Eagles

The Trumbull High wrestling team placed third at the Trumbull Duals on Saturday.

Glastonbury took home the team title with a 42-31 victory over Nanuet (N.Y.).

Coach Niko Filippakis’ Eagles knocked off Shelton High, 57-12, to claim third place.

Trumbull opened the day with a 34-31 win over Daniel Hand of Madison and then defeated Newtown High by a score of 60-18.

Glastonbury (7-1), whose only loss was to fourth-ranked Simsbury High, handed Trumbull (6-4) its only loss, 36-31.

Connor Sollenberger delivered the key victory in the Eagles’ three-point victory over the Hand Tigers.

“Sollenberger did a great job,” Filippakis said after the match. “They bumped up and Connor did very well. I’m very happy with the team, but if they keep wrestling matches like this I’m going to get grey hair.”

Sollenberger took the mat for his 220-pound bout with Eric Syverstein with the Eagles clinging to a 28-25 lead with two matches remaining.

A junior, Sollenberger went right after his foe and used a throw to put the Tiger to his back and get the pin call in 49 seconds.

With the decision in place, Trumbull heavyweight Zack Thompson went into the second period with no score before he got caught riding high and Hand’s Ian Deli recorded the fall at 2:30.

After giving up a forfeit to start the match at 106 pounds, Cross Cannone halved the deficit with a 6-0 victory over Matt Elias.

Hand’s John Lewis scored four points late to extend his lead and win a 12-2 major decision from Dylan Haviland at 120.

Andre Liscinsky scored a major decision of his own at 126, where the senior stacked Owen Gotlick for a quick five-point lead. He came on to earn a takedown with five seconds remaining to boost the lead to 11-2.

Kevin Cecio and Hand’s Ashton Gyneis battled throughout their 135-pound bout.

Cecio led 2-0 after one and used a late reversal to trail 4-3 entering the third.

The Tiger fought off Cecio’s ankle-pick try midway through the final frame and scored a takedown. Cecio had an escape to make the final 6-4 and give Hand a 13-7 lead.

Adam Angelucci drew the Eagles within 13-10 with a 10-3 victory over Kevin Mallon at 138 pounds.

Angelucci built leads of 2-0 and 4-1 before he used an underhook to score five late points to win.

Stephen Briganti wasted little time giving Trumbull the lead at 16-13, when the Eagles’ 145-pounder pinned Jason Wai in 30 seconds.

Trumbull’s Joe Ryan extended the lead to 22-13 when the freshman earned a fall in 3:12 over Lance Hosmer. He led 6-0 at the time.

Brandon Falco made it four straight Trumbull victories with a 9-3 win over Ben Onofrio at 160.

It was 4-3 Fulco when the senior used a deep waist takedown with 1:00 remaining and added three back points that took him to the buzzer.

Hand’s Connor Carrol tied the match with a pin in 3:45 of the Eagles’ Paul McKee at 182.

Before Sollenberger could step up to secure the victory, Trumbull needed Erik Mercado to get the job done at 195 pounds.

A talented senior, Mercado rolled into a reversal for a 4-0 lead in the second period.

Mercado got caught on a poor throw from the mat, but was able to recover and score a two-point takedown in the third to close out his 6-0 decision over Carter Chattilion.

In the consolation final with Shelton, the Eagles posted wins by Cannone (12-0 major decision), Haviland (2:50 pin), Liscinsky (injury default), Cecio (1:00 pin), Angelucci (9-1 major decision), Fulco (13-2 major decision), McKee (36-second pin), Mercado (1:40 pin) and Thompson (32-second pin).
