Softball, boys volleyball open season with victories

Trumbull softball

Trumbull scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Pomperaug, 6-5, in its season opener in Southbury. Becca Sexton struck out 10 batters, hit a triple, and drove in a run. She allowed three hits in her varsity debut. CC Cummings had three hits and scored two runs. Jenna Duffy had a double and an RBI.

St. Joseph softball

Lauren Wasikowski tossed a no-hitter when St. Joseph defeated Newtown 3-0 on Monday. The senior struck out 14 and walked two. Kyra McCarthy (double), Jill Guilfoyle and Wasikowski had RBIs. St. Joe’s blanked Sheehan 8-0 to open the season. Wasikowski allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out 15. Guilfoyle drove in three runs, went 4 for 4, and scored twice from the two-spot in the batting order. Niamh Dougherty led off with two hits and three runs scored. McCarthy had a two-run home run. Guilfoyle hit a home run. Dougherty had a double. Janelli Pratts (run scored) and Riley McDermott had singles. Kelsea Flanagan and Dougherty stole bases.

Trumbull boys’ volleyball

Trumbull won all six sets in opening its season with 3-0 victories over Masuk and Newtown. Senior captain Ben Leeds had 9 kills and 2 aces in the opener. Junior Austin Ashby (8 kills) and classmate Brennan Cutter (7 kills, 5 blocks) were front row standouts. Matt Cherfane led the defense with 13 digs and added four aces. Setter Carson Brunone had 39 assists versus Newtown, with Cutter (16 kills, 5 blocks) and Leeds (7 blocks, 7 kills) doing the damage. Derek Ploski had 5 aces.
