Newtown field hockey stops Trumbull win streak

NEWTOWN — Izzy Butler’s goal with five seconds remaining in the fourth quarter lifted Newtown to a 2-1 non-league field hockey victory over Trumbull on Saturday afternoon.

It was Trumbull’s first regular-season loss in 14 games, dating back to Oct. 29, 2019.

Neither team had many scoring chances in the first three quarters, with Trumbull’s Devon Watson nearly converting a scoring chance late in the first half.

Trumbull’s defense, led by seniors Alannah Fleming and Caroline Pagliaro along with sophomore Ava Consla, was solid allowing just one Newtown shot on goal on its five first-half penalty corner opportunities.

Newtown’s Morgan Melillo scored off a penalty corner with 13:04 left in the final quarter.

Trumbull tied the score six minutes later when junior Jayne Hughes poked home a rebound off a Maura Carbone missed shot.

Play went back and forth until Butler was able to sneak one past for the game-winning goal.

For the game, Trumbull outshot Newtown, 6 to 4.

Trumbull’s Jenny Flynn made one save, while Cailyn Sullivan had three for Newtown (1-0).

Trumbull (1-1) returns to action on Tuesday night when it hosts FCIAC-rival Fairfield Warde at 7 p.m. at McDougall Stadium.
