Marchand sets record as Trumbull sweeps FCIAC quad meet

The Trumbull girls cross country team swept a home FCIAC quad-meet on Tuesday, September 27, earning victories over Fairfield Ludlowe (19-44), Ridgefield (16-46) and Norwalk (15-50).

Eight Eagles finished among the top 11 finishers, led by junior Kathryn Marchand.

Marchand continued her outstanding first season running cross country, finishing first in the 2.9 mile race in 17:42 - 84 seconds faster than the runner-up. Marchand, who led the race from start to finish, recorded the second-fastest time by a FCIAC runner (17:29, Meg Ryan, Fairfield Warde, 2009) on the Trumbull course. Marchand also eclipsed the school’s home course record previously set by former Eagle All-Stater Kali Holden, who ran 18:00 on Oct. 10, 2020.

“Katie went out and tested her fitness and the result was very impressive,” Trumbull head coach Jim McCaffrey said, “I am also excited for the team as ran the fifth fastest combined time in school history. This effort sets us up as we go into the month of October and our focus turn to the FCIAC and state championship meets.”

Senior Abigail Poplawski was third (19:13), while juniors Bridget Walsh (19:47) and Leela Kocinsky (20:24) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Junior Isabel O’Brien finished seventh (20:55), followed by seniors Molly Cousins (8th, 21:04) and Gabby Pavlov (10th, 21:18). Junior Brianna Jackson was 11th (21:20).

Trumbull returns to action on Monday, October 3 when it travels to Wilton for a FCIAC quad-meet against the Warriors, St. Joseph and Fairfield Warde.
