Six Trumbull High girls’ outdoor track & field athletes competed in the CIAC steeplechase competition on Tuesday afternoon at New Britain’s Willow Brook Park.

The steeplechase is a 2,000-meter running event with 18 barriers and five water jumps. To qualify, an athlete must have registered a 12:40 time in the 3,200-meter run during the spring outdoor track & field season.

It was a successful day for head coach Jim McCaffrey’s contingent as four Eagles placed among the top 15 out of a field of 52 participants.

Leading the way was junior Kali Holden, who placed third overall with a time of 7:27.49. Holden’s mark set a THS record. It also qualified her for the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation (NSAF) Nationals. Holden earned All-State honors in the 1600 meters after setting a school record (4:59.71) one week ago at the CIAC State Open.

Classmate Evelyn Marchand placed 10th (7:48.76), while seniors Ella Consla (7:57.02) and Calyn Carbone (8:05.53) finished 12th and 15th, respectively.

Junior Abigail Poplawski (28th, 8:41.21) and senior Brenna Asaro (34th, 8:49.21) rounded out the Eagles’ competitors.
