Carbone’s hat trick leads Trumbull field hockey over St. Joseph

Senior Maura Carbone scored three goals and added one assist as Trumbull defeated St. Joseph, 5-3, in a FCIAC field hockey contest at McDougall Stadium.

With the win, the Eagles (6-7-1) have qualified for the CIAC Class L state tournament.

St. Joseph took a 1-0 lead with two minutes into the game when Anna Salmani converted off a rebound. Twenty-four seconds later, Carbone tied the score converting off a rebound. Carbone then added her second goal of the quarter when she converted off a pass from classmate Kayla Barbagallo with 1:44 left in the quarter.

Barbagallo gave Trumbull a 3-1 lead when she scored - her second goal of the season - off a pass from Carbone on a penalty corner as time expired in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Salmani, her second of the game, cut the lead to 3-2 with a goal off an assist from Ella Dunford. However, just 51 seconds into the final quarter, senior Julia Masiuk scored her first career goal to make it 4-2, off an assist from freshman Kylie Lucia - her first career point.

Dunford kept St. Joseph in the game, making it 4-3 with a nifty goal with 9:16 remaining. However, Carbone then tallied an unassisted goal - for her first career three-goal effort - with 5:16 left for the final 5-3 margin of victory. Carbone now has a team-leading 13 goals and 8 assists on the season.

Barbagallo had a multiple-point goal (1 goal, 1 assist) for the Eagles, while Salmani (2 goals) and Dunford (1 goal, 1 assist) shined for Cadets.

Trumbull outshot the St. Joseph, 23-10, for the game.

Jenny Flynn made six saves for Trumbull (5-7-1, 4-7 in FCIAC).

Sophia Chaves made 13 saves for St. Joseph (1-12-1, 1-10-1 in FCIAC).

Stamford 1, Trumbull 0

Madison Sweeney scored the game’s lone goal as Stamford defeated Trumbull, 1-0, in a FCIAC field hockey contest at Boyle Stadium. Sweeney’s goal, off a rebound to the right of the cage, came with 4:33 left in the first quarter.

Trumbull outshot Stamford, 8-7 and held a 11-5 advantage in penalty corners. The Eagles had seven corners in the fourth quarter but were unable to score. Lauren Dowling made five saves for Stamford (6-9, 5-8 in FCIAC). Jenny Flynn made four saves for Trumbull (6-8-1, 5-8 in FCIAC).
