Carbone erupts for 2 goals in 34 seconds to lead Trumbull field hockey past Newtown

Senior Maura Carbone scored two goals in a 34-second span in the third quarter to lead Trumbull to a 2-1 over host Newtown.

After a scoreless first half, Ellenoire Schoen got Newtown on the board with a goal at the 11:14 off an assist from Rachel Albrecht.

Carbone got the Eagles on the scoreboard when she converted off a pass from classmate Kayla Barbagallo with 5:17 remaining. Carbone then added her second goal just 34 seconds later off an assist from sophomore Nola Antonio.

Trumbull’s defense, led by seniors Lexi Santoro and Jayne Hughes along with sophomore Lia Mora were solid in the scoreless fourth quarter.

Jenny Flynn made five saves for Trumbull, while Riley Alescvich had eight for Newtown (0-1).

Trumbull (1-0-1) returns to action on Monday when it hosts FCIAC-rival Ridgefield at 7 p.m.
