Cynthia Backiel, age 60, of Bridgeport and formerly of Trumbull and Westport, the beloved mother of Joseph Martinez, passed away at home on Thursday, December 11, 2014. She was born in Bridgeport to the late John and Bertha (Kirik) Backiel and grew up in Westport prior to raising her family in Trumbull for more than 20 years. Cindy had a true passion for music. She received a bachelor of arts degree in music from the University of Bridgeport and was the current pianist at the North Park Baptist Church, where she was a devoted member. She was a highly valued employee of American Airlines for\u00a0 more than 30 years. Cindy enjoyed golfing and was a great bowler. She also had an interest in photography, especially of beaches and lighthouses. Cindy led a truly Christian life and shared regularly through news reports and commentary her Christian values as they pertained to daily living and current events. Through her unique approach, Cindy was an Apostle for Christ. Cindy was also very clever and took much pride in the way she added her remarkable flair to every undertaking she took on. This singular \u201cCindy\u201d approach to daily living will certainly be missed. Cindy is survived by her loving son, Joseph Martinez and his wife, Jennifer of Bridgeport; her brother, Jack Backiel and his wife, Judy of Palm Beach, FL; her precious grandson, Derek Martinez; her nephew, John Backiel and his wife, Jessica of Washington, DC; and her niece, Julie Barons and her husband, Matthew of Ellicott City, MD. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at 10 a.m. directly at North Park Baptist Church 5200 Park Ave. in Bridgeport with Pastor Mark Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Friends may greet her family on Monday, December 15, 2014 from 4-7 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Rd., Fairfield Center.
