Obituary: Patricia Flood Doyle, 97, of Trumbull

Patricia Flood Doyle, 97, of Trumbull, passed away in her home June 16.

Patricia was the daughter of Bridgeport Fire Capt. William J. and Mary Palsak Flood. She was the widow of Joseph M. Doyle, longtime owner of Doyle’s Grille on East Main Street.

Following St. Charles Borromeo Grammar School, she graduated salutatorian from Warren Harding High School in 1934. She majored in social studies in the University of Chicago. She was a finalist representing Bridgeport in the Miss Connecticut Pageant. While working in Read’s Department Store in Bridgeport, she was spotted by the World War II poster artist McClelland Barclay and chosen as his portrait subject.

She married Joseph Doyle in 1938. When he opened Doyle’s Grille, she became his cook and bookkeeper for 37 years. While a mother and housewife, she collected for the Red Cross, the Council of Catholic Churches and many other charities.

A lifelong member of the Republican party, she was invited by every Republican president since World War II to visit Washington, D.C. She also collected the autographed photos of those presidents, as well as many Republican awards.

In later years, she enjoyed traveling with her grandchildren and being involved in shaping their futures. Together, they traveled extensively throughout New England and Canada. Most recently, she was happy to be a part of her great-grandchildren’s lives.

She was a skilled and avid knitter since childhood, and often knitted clothing and gifts for her loved ones. She was a lover of animals and was greatly involved in supporting animal rescue organizations. She was a published and prizewinning poet and essayist.

Survivors include a brother, Lawrence J. Flood of Trumbull; a daughter, Patricia Doyle Lungi of Trumbull; four grandchildren, Michael Doyle Patrick (Jiawei) of Shelton, Laurie Patrick Nagy (William) of Trumbull, William Flood Patrick (Tina) of Texas and Kevin Daniels Patrick (Carolyn) of Texas; five great-grandchildren, Steven Nagy, Rachel Nagy, Audrey Patrick, Katherine Patrick and Ryan Patrick; two lifelong friends, Louise Sparling of Florida and Minnie Fildes of Bethel; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday from 9:30- 10:15 a.m. at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Rd., Trumbull, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 220 Shelton Road Trumbull. Burial is private.
