We mourn the passing of our mother, Margaret Nagourney at age 96, who died of natural causes on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017 in Seal Beach, California. She preferred to be called Barbara, a childhood nickname given to her by her father.

A longtime resident of Trumbull Connecticut, she is survived by her children, Brian Nagourney of Shanghai, China, Dr. Robert Nagourney of Long Beach, California, Sarah Nagourney of New York City and her three grandchildren, Adam, Alexander and Natalie.

Barbara was born in Manhattan on November 27th, 1920, the oldest of five children. Her parents were from Limerick City, Ireland. She attended The Cathedral High school and Hunter College in New York.

A total original, Barbara was a staunch feminist with movie star looks, a social activist, gourmet chef and a New Yorker to the core. She lived an artistic lifestyle in Greenwich Village in the 1940s and early 50s and frequented New York City’s famed White Horse Tavern to hear Dylan Thomas readings. She married Alphonse Nagourney and moved to Connecticut in 1951 where she had 4 children. They were married for 60 years until his death at 95 in 2011.

Among her interests were her expert tailoring and suit making, experimenting with international cuisine and her 20+ year commitment to the Trumbull, Connecticut Arts Council. She had amazing style, was always dressed beautifully and ahead of the fashion curve. She enjoyed reading fashion magazines well into her 90s.

A current events aficionado, Barbara was highly articulate and aware of world events until her death. She engaged her family and friends in lively political discussions and at the dinner table, her family was treated to a regular diet of her unique concoctions as well as her interpretations of Indian, Greek, French and Italian food. A true matriarch, her opinions, support and ideas were frequently sought by her extended family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Nagourney Institute for Cancer Research.
