To the Editor:

We would like to thank The Trumbull Times for the recent article, "Flags Placed on Graves in Riverside Cemetery” (by Angela Fortuna, May 31, 2016). There are a few points we’d like to add.

The tradition of placing flags on the graves of soldiers from the Civil War and prior began back in the 1920s by Helen Plumb’s father, Arthur Plumb. The Trumbull Historical Society has consistently maintained that tradition. Each year, prior to Memorial Day, teams of volunteers place flags on the gravestones at all of the town cemeteries. We are so grateful for their time and energy in this effort.

In addition, we would like to thank the Town of Trumbull for once again providing the flags. As you drive past our town’s historic cemeteries, it is a beautiful and poignant sight to see the many flags proudly symbolizing the sacrifice of so many.
