To the Editor:

I commend the Trumbull Times for its strongly worded and long overdue editorial “Respecting both sides — minus the insults.” The most recent example of bullying and demonizing others simply because they disagree with us has a chilling effect on public discourse and sets a bad example for our children. This kind of intolerance for other points of view should have no place in our democratic process. Surely our elected officials should all be capable of “disagreeing without being disagreeable,” even on issues that generate great passion.

Let’s remember that America was founded on principles of free speech and respect for independent thought; let’s encourage reasoned debate on difficult issues, not name-calling.
