Obituary: Virginia (Jency) Mary Sottile Licata, 93, lifelong resident of Stratford
Virginia (Jency) Mary Sottile Licata, age 93, lifelong resident of Stratford, the beloved wife of the late Accursio (Gus) Licata passed away peacefully on January 31, 2014 in Lord Chamberlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with her loving family by her side.
Jency was born on February 15, 1920 in Stratford and was the daughter of the late Biagio and Amedea Saracino Sottile.
Jency and her husband Gus owned and operated Licata’s Market on Hollister Street in Stratford for more than 40 years. Not only was the store a meat market and neighborhood gathering place, but in later years it served as Jency’s kitchen for numerous catered events.
She was known far and wide for her cooking and baking and for her generosity in providing many a home-cooked meal for family, friends and neighbors. Jency will also be remembered for her many years of volunteer service to Project Linus and being a member of a group of dedicated workers at Holy Name of Jesus RC Church in Stratford who sewed quilts and blankets for critically ill infants and children.
Jency is survived by her son Aurelio Licata and wife Renora (Tolomeo) Licata of Lewes, DE formerly of Guilford, one daughter Marie Wucheck and husband Stanley Sr. of Trumbull, five grandchildren, Stanley Wucheck Jr. of Trumbull, Dawn Wucheck Inderdohnan of Centereach, NY, Anthony Licata of Newtown, PA, Nicole (Licata) Grant of New Haven and Nicholas Licata of Milford, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition, to her beloved husband Gus of 49 years, Jency was also predeceased by two brothers Samuel and Alphonso Sottile and two sisters Rose Sottile and Mary Napoli.
Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. DIRECTLY in Holy Name of Jesus Church, 1950 Barnum Avenue, Stratford where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Andrew Marus. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery Trumbull. Friends may call on Tuesday February 4, 2014 from 4:00-7:00 P.M. in the Galello-Luchansky Funeral Home 2220 Main Street Stratford.
