Another early start is planned for Trumbull’s Memorial Day celebrations and honors, culiminating with this year’s parade at 10 a.m.

Selectman Timothy M. Herbst, along with American Legion Post 141 and VFW Post 10059, announced completed plans for Monday’s Memorial Day Parade this week.

“Our parade is an event made possible by the partnership of our town’s veterans’ organizations in conjunction with our town departments, a cadre of resident volunteers, youth and civic organizations and performing marching bands,” Herbst said. “We hope the community will come out in full force this year in honoring those that serve our nation.”

“Remember the Price of Freedom” is the winning theme of year’s event, submitted by Lucas Scarabosio of Frenchtown School. Lucas will be marching in the parade with the grand marshal, George Areson.

Before the parade begins at the Long Hill Green, residents will have a chance to honor veterans with a ceremony at the Vietnam War Memorial on White Plains Road at 8 a.m. The Memorial Day Ceremony on the Town Hall Green will begin at 8:45, honoring all our deceased veterans.

Areson, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War era, will be the guest speaker. The Trumbull resident has served two years on active duty and six years in the reserves. Areson went from the Army to St. John’s University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and later a CPA certificate. During his 40-year business career he was a financial executive at several major international corporations until his retirement in 2000. He subsequently served for several years on Trumbull’s Board of Finance, including a term as vice-chairman.

Areson is a life member of the American Legion and has served as commander of Trumbull Post 141 for the past six years. He is chairman of the Memorial Day Parade Committee and the Veterans’ Day ceremonies held each year at Trumbull High School, and serves as the master of ceremonies for both events.

George Areson and his wife Emily, who is the town’s arts coordinator, have lived in Trumbull for 37 years and their three children are all graduates of the Trumbull public school system.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Route 111 and proceed to the Town Hall.

The earlier start time began last year. In January, the committee polled residents, asking which start time they prefer for the parade. The volunteers received 111 replies; 62% of which preferred the 10 a.m. start time.

As in past years, there will be no throwing of candy, beads or any objects to the the crowd, to avoid injuries to participants and spectators.

Marching in the parade will be the Trumbull High School Golden Eagle Marching Band, the Madison Middle School and the Hillcrest Middle School bands. Local dignitaries, civic organizations, fire companies, Scouts and sports leagues will provide marching units.

All Scout troops, as well as sports leagues, must be in uniform in order to march, according to the town. Each group has to have appropriate standard-bearers identifying individual units or sections and all groups will assemble at the parking lot in front of Marisa’s Restaurant.

In the event the parade is canceled due to inclement weather, an announcement will be made on WICC 600 AM and WEBE 107.9 FM radio prior to 6 a.m. Rain will not stop the memorial service, which will be held in the Council Chambers of Town Hall at 8:45 a.m., if weather is bad.
