The Herald asked both candidates in the Connecticut House of Representatives, District 122 General Election, 2016 the same three questions. Their answers were as follows.
Ben McGorty (Republican)
1) What is the most pressing issue CT is currently facing? What plans do you have to address this issue?
The most pressing issue is currently, is the 79 Million Dollar budget deficit we have. I plan on working in my committees and subcommittees with my colleagues getting the Malloy administration to stop spending and stop the handouts.
2) Why do you feel you're the most qualified to be State Rep. for District 122?
I feel I am the most qualified because of my 36 years in the fire service protecting and educating the community. I am a “roll up the sleeves” type of person and I work hard and enjoy helping people. I volunteer and serve on several boards for non profits and the Shelton Fire Commission.
3) If (re)elected what would be your first action or plan that you implement?
If re-elected I will continue working my goal to eliminate the tax on our pensions and Social Security, so that our senior can continue to live in Connecticut and not move out to live in a state that will not tax them. Work needs to be done to remove the state budget deficit get spending under control and eventually repeal the State Income Tax, so that employers can afford to hire more workers and not leave our state for a more tax free business friendly state.
Angela Capinera (Green Party)
1) What is the most pressing issue CT is currently facing? What plans do you have to address this issue?
The most pressing issue is environment. Connecticut needs to help municipalities replant their trees with trees native to the state. The State also needs to work to add green space, public parks, reduce blight, rehabilitate brownfields, and reduce pollution. My plans are to budget money and request Federal grants to implement the above.
2) Why do you feel you're the most qualified to be State Rep. for District 122?
I've lived in this area my entire life, a combined 20 years between Stratford and Shelton. I know the who, what, when, where, and why of the area. First action: legalize recreational marijuana. The State is missing a huge potential source of income.
3) If elected what would be your first action or plan that you implement?
Legalize recreational marijuana. The State is missing a huge potential source of income.
